The Institut Alain
Visit the Institut Alain, which houses the complete works of Le Vésinet philosopher Alain, as well as his articles published in the 'Dépêche de Rouen et de Normandie' from February 1906 to 1914.
The institute, created in Le Vésinet in 1981 by the town with Robert Bourgne, literary administrator of Alain's work, assembles the 30,883 'Propos d'un Normand'.
The Association des Amis d'Alain, founded on 22 June 1951 at Le Vésinet, three weeks after Alain's death, continues his work.
Emile Chartier, known as Alain (1868–1951) was a French philosopher. He entered the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) in 1889 and in 1909, became professor of Khâgne (preparing students for the highly competitive entrance examination to the ENS) at the Lycée Henri IV, where he ended his career in 1933. His work is of considerable scope, from metaphysics to ethics and politics. He was also a brilliant journalist, an inventor of a genre (the Propos) and one of the most remarkable analysts of the Third Republic.
He bought this small house in Le Vésinet, which he called his Chartreuse, in 1917.
