Cycling from Saint-Germain-en-Laye to Versailles

Travel back in time, kilometre by kilometre, with the story of Louis XIV, from birth to death. The distance may vary slightly, depending on the route chosen and the park opening times at the Palace of Versailles.

Route

 

Departure

Start at Saint-Germain’s Place du Château outside the gates of the national domain.

 

Stage 1 – Town Hall

Take Rue de la Surintendance on your right, then turn left onto Rue de Pontoise which takes you round the Town Hall.

 

Stage 2 – Eglise Saint-Germain

Turn left again onto Rue de la Paroisse, then at Place Charles de Gaulle, pass in front of Saint-Germain church, before joining Rue Saint-Louis.

 

Stage 3 – Parc du Chenil

At the roundabout, take the second exit, Avenue Jean Béranger, and go alongside Parc du Chenil.

 

Stage 4 – Parc de Marly

At the roundabout, take the second exit on the left, then at the end of the avenue, turn right onto Avenue des Combattants and go alongside Parc de Marly.

 

Stage 5 – Tourist Information Office

Pass in front of Marly-le-Roi TIO, then continue on Route de Saint-Cyr. Pass in front of Saint-Vigor church.

 

Stage 6 – Marly Forest

Continue on Rue Georges Tattevin, then again on Route de Saint-Cyr which takes you through 4 kms of woodland.

 

Stage 7 – Fort du Trou d’Enfer

Pass close to the Fort du Trou d’Enfer.

 

Stage 8 – Cueillette de Gally

You will pass alongside the Cueillette de Gally, a fruit and vegetable farm covering 60 hectares. The farm is part of the Fermes de Gally network which is present in Saint-Cyr as well as Sartrouville.

 

Stage 9 – Parc du Château de Versailles

If the Palace gardens are open, take the path on your left past Cueillette de Gally and enter the park by Allée de Bailly. Go as far as the Grand Canal, and bypass it. Exit the park via Allée des Matelots.

Stage 9 alternative – Dr Vaillant

If the Palace gardens are closed, continue straight ahead on Rue du Dr Vaillant.

 

Stage 10 – Versailles Tourist Office

Go right and continue on the D10 road, passing the Tourist Office. Then turn right and go straight on until you come to the statue at Place Hoche. Turn right onto Rue des Réservoirs and go alongside the Palace.

 

Stage 11 – Musée Promenade Marly-le-Roi / Louveciennes

At the Musée Promenade roundabout, take the second exit and follow Marly park to the watering pond. Rejoin Avenue Jean Béranger and go back via the same route as far as Saint-Germain.
